Our Extracurricular Activities

At Summers-Knoll, we understand that the educational process does not have to end when the final bell rings, so we offer a variety of extracurricular activities allowing children to expand their repertoire of learning experiences.

The following descriptions will acquaint you with the current extracurricular options.

Summers-Knoll Band
Our instrumental band program is open to students in grades 4–5. This activity takes place two days a week after school. Beginning, intermediate, and advanced musicians are welcome, with those in the beginning stages asked to take weekly private lessons in addition to the band sessions. Participants are responsible for providing their own instruments; we work with Anderson Music to provide instruments at an affordable monthly rental rate. The band performs as often as possible, including at graduation, music nights, and other school functions. Band is a year-long commitment. There is an additional fee to participate in this activity.

Summers-Knoll Strings
Our strings program is open to all students and takes place after school. Suzuki techniques are used to teach strings to both beginning and more-experienced students alike. The program is comprised of both group and private lessons and runs for the entire school year. There is an additional fee to participate in this activity.

Chess
Led by Ray Garrison, one of Michigan’s top 100 rated tournament players, our chess classes are open to all students regardless of their level of expertise. Beginners are taught the rules of the game, basic moves, and some classic end-game winning strategies. Intermediate and advanced students review several Grandmaster chess games and continue to work on tactics and endings. Class tournaments begin in December. Students also have the option to compete in tournaments throughout the state of Michigan. There is an additional fee to participate in this activity.
